In 2011, Symantec found that despite the public "image", sexually explicit websites that host "adult films" were less likely to pose a security threat from malware compared to religious and ideological websites.
The internet Security Threat Report of 2011 found that you are 3 times more likely to be infected at a church website than an adult site!
This is most likely due to the fact that adult entertainment will hand in a lot of money and hence they can invest in the resources to protect that income - such as giving someone a full time job to maintain the sites. Whereas those who set up religious websites are likely to be less experienced amateurs with no knowledge of how to protect a website.
This finding raises an interesting security concept in that it is not possible to make any assumptions about a website's security based upon its contents! In other words, it's important to treat any website as a potential threat regardless of subject matter!
