Do Ghosts Exist?

I've always been fascinated by ghosts and whether they actually exist.   Could the environment is able to make a recording of very traumatic and emotional events?

Why is it that stories of ghosts have been around for thousands of years but not taken seriously? Some people seem to be open and sensitive to these things and others just think it is a lot of mumbo jumbo?
